🇪🇺 New Border Control System in Spain and the EU: What You Need to Know
👉 Starting October 12, 2025, the Entry/Exit System (EES) of the European Union will officially come into effect — a key transformation in the border management of the Schengen Area.
Its implementation across all border crossings (land, air, and sea) will be progressive over approximately six months, with the goal of the system being fully operational by spring 2026.
This system will replace the manual passport stamping process with an automated digital registration that collects biometric data (fingerprints and facial recognition) from travelers coming from non-EU countries.
🔍 Who does it affect?
· Travelers from non-EU countries who are visa-exempt.
· Travelers who require a Schengen visa.
👉 It does not apply to:
· Spanish citizens and citizens of the European Union (EU).
· Legal residents in Spain or in other Schengen Area states.
🎯 Objective of the EES
The goal is to strengthen security, prevent document fraud, and streamline border checks, while also ensuring accurate traceability of entries and exits.
