By : Antonio Villena

Since May 20, 2025, the new Immigration Regulation has been in effect, introducing key changes for those who have completed studies or training in Spain and wish to continue their professional life here.

According to Elena Villena from the office of Antonio Villena, this reform represents a major step forward for foreign students who have completed their education and want to join the Spanish labor market.

1️⃣ What does the new regulation allow?

Holders of a long-term stay permit for studies or training activities can apply to change it to a residency and work permit (either as an employee or self-employed), provided that:

    • They have completed and obtained the corresponding official degree, diploma, or certificate.

🧑‍🏫 What types of studies allow this change?

The law includes several types of training:

    1. University: bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees.
    2. Vocational Training: intermediate or advanced level.
    3. Courses with professional qualification:

    👉Examples:

    • Course for electrical, gas, or air-conditioning installers.
    • CAP course for professional drivers.
    • Security guard or maintenance technician course.
    • Complete course leading to an official professional certificate.

💡 Important: the courses must be taken at an authorized institution.

2️⃣ What are the steps? ⚙️

    1. Finish your studies or course.
    2. You apply to change from student status to residency and work (as an employee or self-employed).
    3. You can apply from 2 months before or up to 3 months after the expiration of your study stay.
    4. Once your application is accepted, you can legally work full-time while you wait for the final decision.

The first authorization lasts 1 year, and can then be renewed.

3️⃣ Situation of the student’s family members 👨‍👩‍👧

Relatives who are already legally in Spain as the student’s dependants can also change their status along with the principal holder.

    👨‍👩‍👧Relatives who can benefit:

    • Spouse or registered partner.
    • Children under 18, or adult children with a disability who are dependent.

The validity of this residency is linked to that of the principal student, and the best part:
