As of July 2023, it is no longer necessary to live in Spain for more than six months a year to renew residency. A Supreme Court ruling annulled this requirement in the regulation on foreigners.

This means that the residency can be renewed while living in any other country, even minor children can reside outside Spain and renew.

However, it is important to bear in mind that this renewal is valid for two-year periods and does not apply to obtain permanent residency or nationality, as it requires an established period of residency in Spain.
